ROBERT
BOX was born in NYC in 1951. He attended THE SCHOOL OF VISUAL
ARTS in Manhatten1969-1971, majoring in fine arts. After
leaving school in 1972 Robert supported himself as a musician
while developing his style as a painter. He began showing
in the late 70’s at he HENRY HICKS GALLERY in BROOKLYN
HEIGHTS.
During the years 1979-82 his musical career took him to EUROPE
where he spent most of his spare time in museums. By 1985 he
had aged out of his musical role, that of a bass player in
a punk rock band, and began painting seriously. In his PARK
SLOPE BROOKLYN LOFT he created mostly large abstract color-field
paintings. During this period he was in group shows at THE
BROOKLYN MUSEUM, SNUG HARBOR ART CENTER S.I., THE AGORA GALLERY
(SOHO) and THE EDWARD HOPPER HOUSE (NYACK N.Y.)
In 1998, Robert attended the VERMEER show at the METROPOLITAN
MUSEUM OF ART. Upon seeing Vermeer’s WOMAN IN A RED HAT,
he was amazed at the power emanating from an 8”x7” canvas.
In 2000, Robert Box, who usually painted at night under artificial
light, began painting in the early morning light which
flooded his kitchen. What followed was a series of still lifes
which have been his most successful work to date.
